Search levels

The Search level setting decides whether product search uses AI, and for what. Most stores start on Standard and move to Smart Catalog when shoppers use words the catalog doesn’t.

AI is only used for search when you choose a level that needs it. Chat answers are a separate choice: you can keep answers in local mode and still use Smart Catalog. See Answer modes.

Level What it does AI calls Needs
Standard Searches your product names, categories, tags and attributes, with typo fixing. None Nothing extra
Smart Catalog AI adds the other names shoppers use for each product (sneakers, trainers, kicks). Searches never wait for AI. Once per product, when its words are written An OpenAI or Zywrap key
Smart Catalog + Rescue Everything in Smart Catalog. Also asks AI when a search finds nothing (“something to keep warm”) and remembers the answer for everyone. Per product, plus once per new phrase that finds nothing An OpenAI or Zywrap key, and Commerce Pro

Each level includes the ones before it, so Smart Catalog + Rescue keeps writing Smart Catalog words too.

With Commerce Pro and either AI level, Geeky Bot also learns from missed searches once a day and suggests synonyms for you to approve. See Search Rescue and learning.

  1. Save an OpenAI or Zywrap key under Geeky Bot → AI & Privacy if you plan to use Smart Catalog or Rescue. See OpenAI or Zywrap.
  2. Open Geeky Bot → Product Search and go to Search level.
  3. Under How product search finds products, select Standard, Smart Catalog or Smart Catalog + Rescue.
  4. Optional: under Also add words in these languages, tick any extra languages for Smart Catalog words.
  5. Select Save search level.

Moving between Standard and an AI level rebuilds the product index in the background, and shoppers keep searching the current index while it runs. Moving between Smart Catalog and Smart Catalog + Rescue changes nothing in the index.

Searches themselves never call AI at the Standard or Smart Catalog level. The table lists everything that leaves your site for product search.

Level Sent to the AI provider When Shopper data?
Standard Nothing Never No
Smart Catalog For each visible product: title, categories, tags, attributes (without colours and sizes) and a summary of up to 240 characters from the short or full description When Smart Catalog is switched on, when a product is added or its name, categories, tags or attributes change, and when you ask for words to be rewritten No
Smart Catalog + Rescue The wording of a search that found nothing, and a list of your store’s category and product-type words Only when a search finds nothing and the same wording hasn’t been answered in the last 30 days Yes, the search wording
Learning from missed searches (Commerce Pro, either AI level) The text of recent shopper messages that found no products, with the same list of store words Once a day Yes, the message text

Price and stock changes never send anything. All AI calls for search count towards the site-wide daily and monthly AI call limits under Geeky Bot → AI & Privacy. See AI limits and costs.

Smart Catalog, Rescue and learning use the same AI connection. Geeky Bot picks it in this order:

  1. Zywrap, when Zywrap is your answer mode and a Zywrap key is saved.
  2. OpenAI, when an OpenAI key is saved.
  3. Zywrap, when a Zywrap key is saved.

The Search level card shows the connection in use, for example “Uses your AI connection: OpenAI gpt-4o-mini”. If no key is saved, it says Smart Catalog needs an AI connection and nothing is sent.
